WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FILE AND FOLDER ONLY BACKUP AND IMAGED BASED MANAGED BACKUP FROM THROTTLENET?

Before we answer that, let’s discuss a couple of numbers – 4 and 24?

In more specific terms, if you had a choice between 4 hours and 24 hours of downtime, which would you choose? That’s the difference between a Managed Backup by ThrottleNet and a file and folder only backup – 4 hours of downtime versus 24 hours – minimum. However, in order to know which is right for you, there are two factors you must consider:

  • What type of backup – file and folder only or image based?
  • Where should you house your backup – locally, the Cloud or both?

WHAT IS A FILE AND FOLDER ONLY BACKUP?

Answer ▶▶

In the case of a file and folder only backup – even if it’s housed in the cloud – your downtime is increased by 20 hours or more.

WHY? File and folder only backups merely back up those files and folders you designate and not the entire Microsoft operating system along with all patches and updates. This means that before you can restore your files and folders, you must install the operating system – assuming you still have the disks or license key – plus any updates and patches that have been applied since the operating systems inception. This could be years’ worth of updates and patches all being downloaded via your local data connection. This process alone can take 24 hours or more to complete during which time your business, is out of business.

WHAT IS AN IMAGE-BASED BACKUP?

Image-based backups are a full image of the Microsoft operating system, all patches and updates since inception plus all files and folders. This type of backup solution allows you to restore the entire image including the operating system, patches, updates, files and folders resulting in downtime of 4 hours or less depending on the solution and the nature of the issue.

WHAT IS A LOCAL ONLY BACKUP?

Local only backups can be both image based and file/folder only; however, the vulnerability of this type of backup remains the same regardless of which you choose. This is because local only backups typically overwrite each night meaning if you’re the victim of a ransomware attack, your backup is most likely encrypted since this is typically the first thing a cyber-criminal does. In addition, if your facility is struck by a natural disaster, your servers along with any local backup solution are most likely lost and unrecoverable.

WHAT IS A LOCAL PLUS CLOUD BACKUP?

Answer ▶▶

Local plus Cloud backups provide your organization with the most effective backup solution available for a variety of reasons. First, you typically have a local backup appliance to restore from. The benefit here being a timelier restore of the data since there’s no need to traverse the internet to do so. Next and in the event your local backup is destroyed, you can retrieve your information from a secure, offsite environment for local restoration and, in some cases, you can even work directly from the offsite location via secure remote access virtually eliminating downtime altogether.

Finally, these solutions typically perform incremental backups as frequent as every 5 minutes resulting in multiple versions of your backup files. This means if you’re the victim of a ransomware attack, you simply restore from an image (version) prior to the attack taking place making it as if it never happened.

Datto is a true BUSINESS CONTINUITY AND DISASTER RECOVERY solution as it relates to your Information Technology and provides multiple layers redundancy in the event of a disaster. Datto allows you to run your entire business via a local appliance that’s installed in your server room. This appliance is performing regular backups locally in addition to pushing incrementalbackups to a secure Cloud environment.

In the event of a complete hardware failure, ThrottleNet can transition you and your employees to this appliance – or mini server, if you will – until such time as your local server is operational again. Once your server is online, ThrottleNet will simply restore the image – including any changes – on your newly installed or repaired server resulting in minimal downtime and data loss.
